Trump plans long-term asylum halt after White House shooting

(MENAFN) According to reports, US President Donald Trump said his administration intends to impose a lengthy halt on asylum admissions after a fatal shooting near the White House involving an Afghan national.

While speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One during his flight back to Washington, DC after spending Thanksgiving in Florida, he said the pause would last “a long time.” When pressed for specifics, he added, “We have enough problems. We don’t want those people.”

Asked whether the suspension might extend for a year or two, Trump replied, “No time limit, but it could be a long time.”

He explained that the planned measure targets migrants from countries he described as “very crime ridden” and “not friendly to us,” asserting that some of these nations are “out of control themselves.” He also singled out Somalia, claiming such individuals “come into our country and tell us how to run our country.”

Trump was referring to Somalia-born Representative Ilhan Omar.

The remarks followed the identification of Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, as the suspected gunman responsible for killing a National Guard member and injuring another near the White House earlier in the week. According to reports, Lakanwal arrived in the US in 2021 after the turbulent American withdrawal from Afghanistan and had previously worked with several US government bodies, including intelligence agencies.
