Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Jolts Afghanistan's Hindu Kush

(MENAFN) A powerful tremor measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Afghanistan's mountainous Hindu Kush territory during the early hours of Friday, data from the German Research Center for Geosciences confirms.

The seismic event occurred at 0539GMT, with its epicenter located 61 kilometers (38 miles) away from Kunduz, a northern urban center. Geological surveys placed the quake's origin at a shallow 10 km (6.2 mi) beneath the surface.

Authorities have yet to confirm any fatalities or structural destruction in the affected areas.

The tremor arrives weeks after a devastating 6.3 magnitude disaster claimed at least 27 lives and left 956 people wounded across multiple northern provinces—Balkh, Samangan, Sar-e-Pul, Baghlan and Kunduz—last month.

Afghanistan's seismic vulnerability was brutally exposed in August when an earthquake ravaged the eastern region, resulting in catastrophic losses: more than 2,200 people perished and around 4,000 others sustained injuries. Kunar province bore the brunt of that catastrophe's destruction.
